The West Huntspill Table Tennis Club was established in 1978 by local man, Pete Bamber. He was a keen player in the Bridgwater League and wanted to encourage his own and other local children to take up the sport. To that end, he campaigned in the village, receiving sufficient interest to spur him into forming a new club at the Balliol Hall.
Membership fees and various fund-raising ventures allowed the club to purchase the equipment they needed and the club became very popular with early evening sessions for children, followed by later sessions for the adults.
In order to raise the ability of the youngsters, allowing them to progress to league competition, Pete signed up with the English Table Tennis Coaching system and achieved a Club Coach certificate. Using this to maximum effect he was soon able to enter his young players in the Somerset Knockout Competition, where they did very well.
West Huntspill Table Tennis Club has thrived over the years and is now 42 years old. Pete is as enthusiastic as ever, playing in the Bridgwater Premier Division, and his coaching skills have been instrumental in making WHTTC one of the best in the Bridgwater League. We now have about 30 members, some well into their 80’s, with teams playing in all three divisions of the League.
We are always happy to welcome new players both for recreational exercise and league competition but always for fun and social interaction. If you are interested please give me a call.
